About This Project
Ponyfish Island floats on the Yarra River beneath the Southbank Pedestrian Bridge in Melbourne. In 2017 Ponyfish Island was renovated, and Lygon St Nursery installed new plants to bring a fresh look to bar.
Lygon St Nursery used the original succulent plants in a new planting scheme and mixed native grasses and new succulents.
Lygon St Nursery chose the plants because they can survive the extreme weather conditions (heat, cold and wind) that affect the bar. The native grasses pay respect to the historic vegetation that once inhabited the banks of the Yarra River.
Included in the design were dense plantings of native grasses and succulents and many steel planters boxes. The chosen plants were added because they help to reinforce the idea of an island.
Black mesh and steel planters adorn the existing beams that support the pedestrian bridge. The locations of the mounted steel planter boxes ensure that the subtle greenery does not impact on patrons visiting Ponyfish Island.
